France may rotate against Paraguay giant-killers in World Cup last 16

Didier Deschamps is weighing up changes to his France side as Les Bleus prepare to face Paraguay in the World Cup 2026 last 16, with the manager expected to freshen up his line-up against the tournament’s surprise package.

France have breezed through the competition so far, showing few signs of struggle despite the demanding conditions in North America, and go into Saturday’s tie as heavy favourites to reach the quarter-finals.

Paraguay reached this stage by stunning Germany in the last 32, edging through on penalties after the tie finished level at one goal apiece following extra time. Ranked 34th in the world, they will need another huge upset to trouble Deschamps’ men in Philadelphia.

Deschamps ready to shuffle his pack

With tougher opposition potentially looming in the shape of Morocco, Spain or Portugal further down the line, the France boss may use this fixture to give some of his established stars a breather. He has already shown a willingness to rotate throughout this World Cup.

Theo Hernandez could come in for Lucas Digne at left-back, while Maxence Lacroix is in contention to replace either William Saliba or Dayot Upamecano in the heart of defence.

Further forward, Aurelien Tchouameni has started alongside Adrien Rabiot in defensive midfield in all but one of France’s matches at the tournament so far. Having played nearly every minute available, the Real Madrid man could be rested with Manu Kone poised to step into the side.

Mbappe certain to start as attackers rotate

Kylian Mbappe remains undroppable and will continue to lead the line regardless of any wider changes, with the prolific forward expected to accept nothing less than a starting role.

The three attacking positions behind him look more likely to be shuffled. Given his history of fitness problems, Ousmane Dembele could be given a rest, opening the door for Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola to come into the side.

Rayan Cherki is another who may be handed some game time, though he faces a battle to dislodge Michael Olise from the number 10 role.

Predicted France XI and match details

Predicted France XI: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, Hernandez; Kone, Rabiot; Doue, Olise, Barcola; Mbappe.

France take on Paraguay at 10pm BST on Saturday 4 July 2026 at Philadelphia Stadium, with the match broadcast live on the BBC.
