Odegaard Galatasaray transfer talk dismissed as Arsenal captain stays focused on World Cup

Claims that Martin Odegaard has struck an agreement to join Galatasaray have been firmly rejected, with the Arsenal captain instead said to be entirely settled at the Emirates Stadium. The Mirror reports that suggestions of a deal are “entirely without foundation”, despite Turkish reports claiming his agent had been seen in Istanbul.

Sources close to the 27-year-old have clarified that his representative, Bjorn Kvarme, has in fact been alongside him in the United States throughout the World Cup, supporting his impressive performances for Norway. According to the Mirror, Odegaard is understood to be “very happy” at Arsenal, with the club equally pleased with his contribution both on and off the pitch during their Premier League title triumph.

Odegaard shining on the biggest stage

Odegaard has become just the third player since 1966 to register an assist in each of his first three World Cup appearances, underlining the form that has made him one of Norway’s key figures in America. His side face Brazil on Sunday evening as they bid to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

The midfielder endured a difficult run of injuries during the previous campaign, battling two separate shoulder issues before a knee problem kept him sidelined for extended periods. He also faced fresh competition for his place from Eberechi Eze, yet remained a hugely influential presence whenever he was available.

Arteta’s backing remains unwavering

Mikel Arteta has consistently played down any talk of a change to Arsenal’s captaincy, repeatedly making clear his continued support for Odegaard in the role. The Norwegian also enjoys unanimous backing from his teammates, who voted to keep him as skipper.

Odegaard already leads his country, having taken on the captaincy for Norway a year before assuming the armband at Arsenal, further underlining his standing as a leader both domestically and internationally.

Pre-season plans loom

Should Norway’s World Cup campaign come to an end against Brazil, Odegaard would then begin his summer break, which has been extended by his involvement in the tournament. However, he could still be back in the fold before the end of July.

Arsenal’s pre-season schedule is set to begin on 1 August with a trip to face Girona, followed by a fixture against Real Betis in Dublin on 5 August. The Gunners will be hoping to have their captain available as they build towards the new campaign following their title-winning season.
