Cole Palmer: ‘I could have offered something different’ after England World Cup snub

Cole Palmer has broken his silence on being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, telling The Times he felt he “could have offered something different” for the Three Lions this summer. The Chelsea forward, 23, was one of several high-profile absentees from Tuchel’s 26-man party bidding to end six decades without a major men’s trophy in North America.

Palmer scored in the Euro 2024 final but endured an injury-disrupted and, by his own standards, underwhelming season in the Premier League this term. Tuchel had also suggested the attacking midfielder had struggled to influence matches when previously called up by his country, factors widely seen as contributing to his exclusion from the World Cup panel.

Palmer reflects on missing out

Speaking publicly for the first time since the squad was announced, Palmer admitted the omission had been difficult to take as England prepare for their latest World Cup fixture against Mexico. He told The Times he still wished he was with the group at their base in Kansas City.

“Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup,” Palmer said. “But it’s a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason. But I’m just trying to enjoy the summer off – the first summer I’ve ever had off.”

The former Manchester City academy graduate has been pictured on holiday during the off-season, using the rare break to recharge after a taxing campaign at Stamford Bridge. Palmer’s absence from the squad was one of the more eye-catching selection calls made by Tuchel ahead of the tournament, given his prominent role at Euro 2024 and his standing as one of English football’s most talked-about young talents.

England’s focus shifts to Mexico

Tuchel’s squad have instead pressed on without Palmer, with attention now turning to England’s knockout clash against Mexico. The German coach has leaned on other attacking options throughout the competition, having made clear before the tournament that his final selection would be based on current form and impact rather than reputation alone.

For Palmer, the challenge now is to use his enforced summer off to reset ahead of pre-season with Chelsea, with question marks over whether a strong return to club form could put him back in contention for future England squads. His comments to The Times suggest no lingering rift with Tuchel, but a clear sense of frustration at watching a home nation’s World Cup campaign unfold from the sidelines.
