Larne, Coleraine, Linfield and Glentoran chase fresh Irish League European history

Four Irish Premiership clubs kick off their European adventures this summer as Larne, Coleraine, Linfield and Glentoran attempt to add to the small but growing list of Northern Irish sides to make an impact on the continental stage. According to BBC Sport NI, this season’s quartet represents the biggest opportunity yet for the league to build on the historic breakthrough achieved by Larne two years ago.

Larne remain the only Irish League club to have reached the league phase of a European competition, doing so in the Conference League back in 2024 after eliminating Lincoln Red Imps. That achievement has raised expectations across the four clubs now representing Northern Ireland in Europe’s qualifying rounds.

Larne begin title defence of European hopes in San Marino

Fresh from winning their third league title in four seasons, Larne open their Champions League qualifying campaign away to San Marino champions Tre Fiori on 7 July, with the return leg at home the following week. Tre Fiori have undergone a significant squad overhaul over the off-season, losing 11 players and bringing in eight new faces.

History offers the Inver Reds some encouragement: Linfield beat the same San Marino outfit 2-0 in Nyon back in 2020 en route through Champions League qualifying. Larne manager Gary Haveron, speaking to BBC Sport NI, said the players are eager to experience European nights again after six consecutive years in continental competition.

“The players want to get back there and experience it again, as the six individual games are a fantastic experience,” Haveron said. “Every single one of the games was a huge event and a big moment in the club’s history. Every time you step foot on the pitch in Europe, you are trying to create history for the club and the country and I think Larne have done that really well.”

Should Larne lose the tie, their European involvement continues as they would drop into the third round of Conference League qualifying.

Coleraine return to Europe against Finnish opposition

Coleraine have secured their first European campaign since 2018 after finishing runners-up in the league and lifting the Irish Cup. Manager Ruaidhri Higgins has strengthened his squad with the international experience of new arrivals Conor McMenamin and Jay Henderson, alongside the return of Ben Doherty, who has previous continental pedigree.

The Bannsiders face Finnish side HJK Helsinki in the second qualifying round of the Conference League on 23 and 30 July. HJK currently sit fifth in the Veikkausliiga after 14 matches and boast the division’s second-highest goal tally.

“We are certainly going to go into it as underdogs. They are a big name in Finnish football and have big-name players,” Higgins said. “They are halfway through their season, but we have good preparation time. As much as they will be right in the thick of it and match ready, the ideal scenario is to keep the tie alive coming back.”

Linfield seek revenge for past European heartbreak

Linfield fans still recall the pain of 2022, when a late own goal by Jimmy Callacher forced extra time and penalties against Latvian side RFS, denying the Blues what would have been a first Irish League group-stage appearance. David Healy’s men, who qualified for Europe via the end-of-season play-offs, have often found continental qualifiers tough going despite their domestic success.

This time Linfield face Estonia’s Nomme Kalju FC in the first qualifying round of the Conference League. The Estonian side, currently third in their league and 12 points behind leaders Levadia, travel to Windsor Park after the first leg, having won just once in their last six outings.

Linfield’s previous European campaign ended at the hands of Premier Division rivals Shelbourne, and a win over Nomme Kalju could set up another meeting with the Dubliners further along the qualifying path.
