Napoli move to tie down Scott McTominay with bumper new contract offer

Napoli are reportedly preparing to hand Scott McTominay a substantial new contract in a bid to keep the Scotland midfielder in Naples for years to come, quashing suggestions of a Manchester United reunion.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli intend to offer the 29-year-old fresh terms running until 2030, along with a significant pay rise that would make him one of the club’s highest earners.

McTominay still has two years remaining on his existing deal after joining Napoli from Manchester United in 2024, but the Italian club are said to be determined not to leave anything to chance amid speculation over his future.

De Laurentiis pushes for early talks

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has reportedly instructed director Giovanni Manna to open formal negotiations with McTominay’s representatives without delay.

Questions had been raised over the midfielder’s long-term standing at the club following Antonio Conte’s departure, but Napoli remain committed to extending his stay under new head coach Max Allegri.

McTominay himself has previously made clear where his heart lies. Speaking last year, he said: “I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player. It is all I think about.

“The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time. I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I’m happy.”

Napoli aware of the challenge

Despite the club’s determination to secure his signature on a new deal, Napoli chief Leonardo Giammarioli admitted back in February that he had concerns about retaining the midfielder long-term.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Giammarioli said: “Yeah, of course I’m worried. But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.”

He added: “Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there’s not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important.”

Giammarioli went on to acknowledge the financial realities facing Serie A clubs. “It’s a bit complicated for Serie A and our competitive clubs… the league is still making losses in revenue. Of course, it’s hard to keep up with the other big four leagues, but we’re trying to improve and be competitive,” he said.

“Keeping players is difficult, it wasn’t easy to get them, it’s even harder to keep them. We need to be smart about our signings… every bit of money we spend must count.”

A key figure in Naples

McTominay has become a genuine standout since leaving Old Trafford, racking up 80 appearances for Napoli and contributing 27 goals across all competitions.

His form in Serie A had fuelled talk of interest back in England, but Napoli’s willingness to make him one of their best-paid players suggests they are determined to keep hold of one of their most influential performers for the foreseeable future.
