World Cup Golden Boot race: Mbappe leads Messi and Haaland as Kane closes in

The battle for the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot has turned into one of the closest scoring races in recent memory, with Kylian Mbappe edging ahead of Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland heading into the tournament’s latter stages. Harry Kane, meanwhile, has kept England’s hopes alive with a return of six goals, while Jude Bellingham has also pushed himself into contention.
Mbappe leads the standings with seven goals, having scored twice against Senegal, added another against Iraq, netted a further double against Sweden in the last 32, and then converted from the spot in France’s win over Paraguay in the round of 16. According to the Independent, his two assists have pushed him above Messi and Haaland, who are also on seven goals apiece but have yet to register an assist of their own.
Messi and Haaland level on goals
Messi has been in remarkable form for Argentina, scoring a hat-trick against Algeria before adding a double against Austria, a match in which he broke the all-time World Cup scoring record despite missing a penalty. He came off the bench to score against Jordan and struck again in a narrow last-32 win over Cape Verde.
Haaland has been equally prolific for Norway, scoring in his 14th successive international appearance with a brace against Brazil in the round of 16 to draw level with Messi and move within one goal of Mbappe. Under the tournament’s tie-break rules, goals decide the initial standings, with assists used to separate players level on goals, and minutes played and goals-per-minute ratio applied if a tie persists.
Kane and Bellingham fly the flag for England
Kane has kept himself firmly in the mix with six goals and an assist, having scored twice to help England beat DR Congo before adding a goal and a set-up against Mexico. Bellingham has also enjoyed a strong tournament, taking his own tally to four goals with a brace against Mexico that has drawn him level with several other contenders further down the standings.
Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal has also entered the conversation after a double against Austria took him to four goals, while Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot in Portugal’s dramatic knockout win over Croatia to remain in touch, albeit with ground still to make up on the leading pack.
