Hednesford Town land Wrexham hero Aaron Hayden in statement swoop

Hednesford Town have made a bold early statement of intent for the new National League North season by signing centre-back Aaron Hayden, a player who played a key role in Wrexham’s remarkable rise through the divisions.

The 29-year-old is best known for his part in the Hollywood-backed transformation at the Racecourse Ground, where he helped Wrexham secure back-to-back promotions that took the Welsh club from the National League into League One.

Hayden later returned to former club Carlisle United, where he spent a couple of seasons, before now dropping down to Step 2 to join the newly-promoted Pitmen, as reported by The Non-League Football Paper.

Ambitious Pitmen strengthen ranks

Hednesford earned their place in the National League North after winning the play-offs in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, and the capture of Hayden underlines their intent to compete at the higher level.

A powerful and experienced centre-half, Hayden brings a wealth of know-how from his time at a club that experienced rapid success on and off the pitch, and his arrival at Keys Park will be seen as a significant coup for the Staffordshire side.

He is not the only new face through the door this summer. Hednesford have also added Jai Curran-Nicholls and Lenni Cirino to their squad as they build for the campaign ahead, according to The Non-League Football Paper.

A busy summer in National League North

Hayden’s move comes amid a flurry of transfer activity across Step 2, with clubs such as Brackley Town, Merthyr Town, Truro City and Hereford also strengthening their squads ahead of the new season, as detailed by The Non-League Football Paper.

For Hednesford, though, the addition of a player with Hayden’s pedigree and top-flight non-league experience stands out as one of the division’s headline signings so far this summer.
