World Cup 2026: How UK fans can watch every knockout match free-to-air

Every remaining fixture at the 2026 World Cup will be available free-to-air in the UK, with the BBC and ITV sharing coverage of the knockout rounds as the tournament heads towards its climax. The Independent reports that STV will also carry ITV’s matches for viewers in Scotland.

England’s involvement has given the schedule extra significance for domestic audiences. The Three Lions came through their round of 32 tie against DR Congo before edging past Mexico in the round of 16, according to the results detailed by The Independent, setting up a quarter-final against Norway.

Kick-off times a mixed bag for UK viewers

With the tournament being staged across North America, UK audiences face a wide spread of kick-off times, from early evening slots to matches in the small hours. The Independent notes that some fixtures kick off as early as 6pm or 8pm BST, offering more sociable viewing, while others fall in the middle of the night.

Among the confirmed broadcast details, Portugal’s clash with Spain was shown at 8pm BST on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website. The USA’s meeting with Belgium followed in the early hours, again on BBC platforms, while Argentina against Egypt and Switzerland against Colombia were carried by ITV1, ITVX and STV in Scotland.

England’s quarter-final and the road to the final

England’s quarter-final against Norway is scheduled for a 10pm BST kick-off, according to The Independent, with broadcast details for the last-eight ties still to be confirmed at the time of publication. France’s quarter-final against Morocco was pencilled in for a 9pm BST kick-off.

The Independent’s schedule also lists two semi-finals on consecutive evenings in mid-July, both at 8pm BST, ahead of a third-place play-off and the final itself, which is due to kick off at 8pm BST. Broadcast channels for those later stages had yet to be finalised when the report was published.

Free-to-air access for the whole knockout stage

The key point for supporters, as The Independent stresses, is that none of the remaining matches will disappear behind a paywall. Every round of 32, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and the final are being made available on free-to-air television in the UK, split between the BBC and ITV.

That arrangement mirrors the group stage, which also saw every fixture broadcast free-to-air, including Scotland’s opening win over Haiti. With England still involved and a number of major nations progressing through the bracket, interest in the closing stages of the competition looks set to remain high across UK households.
