Pep Guardiola provided one of the more unusual sights of the Premier League season when he planted a kiss on the cheek of fourth official Craig Pawson during Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The City manager had been involved in a heated exchange with Pawson on the touchline in the closing stages of the match, only to defuse the situation by leaning in for the surprise smacker. Footage of the moment quickly spread on social media, with Pawson appearing momentarily stunned before smiling and returning to his duties.

Guardiola’s mood soon soured, however. City had led since the ninth minute through Erling Haaland’s opener and looked on course for three points until Gabriel Martinelli struck deep into stoppage time, chipping Gianluigi Donnarumma to snatch a point for the Gunners.

Late Martinelli strike denies City victory

Pawson had signalled seven minutes of additional time shortly after the exchange with Guardiola, and it was in that period that Arsenal found their equaliser. The result means Arsenal remain unbeaten in their last five Premier League meetings with City, a run that will concern Guardiola as his side continue to chase down their rivals at the top of the table.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Guardiola gave a measured assessment of the contest. “Today we played against a powerful team,” he said. “Hats off to our team for the resilience. It’s so difficult when you’re not effective with high pressing, it’s always tough in the build-up. We made some transitions. I think the result is fair. In general, Arsenal were better.”

No mention of the kiss

Guardiola made no reference to his moment with Pawson in his post-match remarks, leaving the fourth official’s brief brush with viral fame unremarked upon by the man responsible for it. The clip, however, has continued to circulate widely among supporters amused by the unusual show of affection in the heat of a Premier League derby.

For Arsenal, the point extends a strong recent record against City in the fixture, while Guardiola will hope his side can find greater composure at the death when the two clubs next meet.
