World Cup 2026: Every nation eliminated so far, including Scotland

Scotland are among 36 nations already out of the 2026 World Cup, with the group stage and the round of 32 now complete and the tournament down to its last 16. BBC Sport has confirmed the full list of departed sides, with Steve Clarke’s team among four third-placed finishers whose group records were not strong enough to see them through.
Of the 48 teams who began the finals, only a dozen remain in contention. Twelve sides finished bottom of their respective groups and were eliminated immediately, according to BBC Sport: the Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curaçao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Panama.
Scotland among third-placed nations to miss out
Alongside those bottom-of-the-group exits, four teams who finished third in their groups also failed to progress once the wider group-stage rankings were calculated. Iran, South Korea, Scotland and Uruguay make up that quartet, missing out on the expanded knockout stages despite avoiding last place.
The round of 32 then claimed a further sixteen nations. South Africa, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Ivory Coast, Sweden, Ecuador, DR Congo, Senegal, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Austria, Cape Verde, Australia, Algeria and Ghana all bowed out at that stage, leaving several of the game’s traditional heavyweights already heading home.
Mexico and Brazil among round of 16 casualties
The round of 16 has since added four more names to the list of eliminated nations. Canada, Paraguay, Brazil and co-hosts Mexico have all now departed, with Mexico’s exit coming in a dramatic early-morning defeat to England, as reported by BBC Sport.
That result made headlines across the tournament, with BBC Sport noting the scenes as England overcame the co-hosts to advance further into the competition. It leaves Mexico’s home World Cup ending sooner than many of their supporters had hoped, despite the significance of playing on their own soil.
Full list of eliminated teams
According to BBC Sport, the complete roll call of nations knocked out of the 2026 World Cup so far reads: Turkey, Haiti, New Zealand, Tunisia, Jordan, Panama, Qatar, Czech Republic, Curaçao, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Iran, South Korea, Scotland, Uruguay, South Africa, Japan, Germany, Netherlands, Ivory Coast, Sweden, Ecuador, DR Congo, Senegal, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Austria, Cape Verde, Australia, Algeria, Ghana, Canada, Paraguay, Brazil and Mexico.
With 36 of the original 48 entrants now out of the running, the World Cup enters its quarter-final phase with only twelve nations left standing. England’s continued involvement, following their win over Mexico, will be of particular interest to supporters back home as the tournament heads towards its business end.
