England fans furious as BBC iPlayer crashes during dramatic Mexico World Cup clash

England supporters watching on BBC iPlayer were left fuming during the Three Lions’ World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico, as the streaming service repeatedly cut out and buffered through a dramatic early-morning tie at the Azteca Stadium.

Fans took to social media to complain about delays, intermittent drop-outs, connectivity problems and poor video quality just as Jude Bellingham was scoring twice for England in the small hours of Monday.

Several supporters posted on X saying they heard celebrations from their local pub or from neighbours’ houses before the goals had even appeared on their own iPlayer feed, with the stream apparently running well behind the live action in Mexico.

Reports spiked minutes before kick-off

According to DownDetector, user reports of problems with the service began surging at around 1.54am BST, just six minutes before the scheduled kick-off, as thousands tuned in for the biggest England fixture of the tournament so far.

Despite the volume of complaints, there was no acknowledgement of technical issues during the BBC’s coverage. Instead, viewers were reminded to make sure they had paid for a TV Licence before the start of the second half, adding to the frustration of those struggling to follow the action at all.

Kick-off itself had already been pushed back after thunderstorms in Mexico City, meaning many England fans were following the match deep into the night before the streaming problems compounded their evening.

A chaotic night on and off the pitch

The technical gremlins came during a frantic contest in which Bellingham’s double had put England in control before Jarell Quansah was sent off following a heated touchline scuffle involving England’s coaching staff. Mexico then hit back to draw level at 3-2, with Harry Kane conceding a penalty moments after netting himself, leaving the Three Lions to see out the closing stages a man down.

For many fans following remotely, the ebb and flow of that drama was obscured by buffering wheels and frozen frames, with some describing the experience of hearing pub cheers before their own picture had caught up as particularly galling given the stakes of a World Cup knockout tie.

The BBC has not yet issued a public response addressing the specific complaints about iPlayer’s performance during the match.
