Brentford close in on free transfer deal for Callum Wilson after West Ham exit

Brentford are set to sign former England striker Callum Wilson on an initial 12-month contract, following his release by relegated West Ham United. According to the BBC, the 34-year-old is in advanced talks with the west London club, with a deal expected to be finalised this week.
Wilson became a free agent after leaving the London Stadium at the end of last season, when West Ham suffered relegation from the Premier League. His arrival at Brentford would offer fresh competition up front for Brazil international Igor Thiago, who the BBC reports is “not for sale at any price” despite reported offers of £80 million or £90 million for the striker this summer.
Squad reshuffle expected
Should the move go through, it is understood that Belgian forward Kaye Furo, 19, would be permitted to move out on loan for the coming campaign to gain further first-team experience elsewhere. That would leave Wilson and Thiago as Brentford’s senior striking options heading into the new season.
Wilson brings considerable Premier League pedigree to the Bees. He has previously featured for West Ham, Newcastle United and Bournemouth in the top flight, and won nine England caps between 2018 and 2023, scoring twice.
He was also part of England’s squad at the 2022 World Cup. Last season at West Ham, Wilson scored seven goals in 32 appearances as the club were relegated.
Coventry interest did not materialise
Wilson had also been linked with a return to his boyhood club Coventry City, who are preparing for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years after winning the Championship title last season. However, it now appears Brentford have moved to secure his signature ahead of a possible reunion with the Sky Blues.
The BBC’s Sami Mokbel and Nizaar Kinsella report that the deal is expected to be completed this week, giving Brentford boss additional firepower and know-how as they look to strengthen their forward line for the new campaign.
