Celtic transfer target Camilo Duran: the scouting report behind the Qarabag striker

Celtic are being encouraged to push through a deal for Qarabag forward Camilo Duran, with the Daily Record reporting that the Azerbaijani champions are seeking around £3million for the 24-year-old.

After a slow start to the transfer window that has left supporters increasingly frustrated, the report suggests Duran represents exactly the kind of low-risk, high-reward addition Celtic have been crying out for. The South American winger, who began his career in Portugal, has spent last season catching the eye across Europe with Qarabag.

A rebel with an eye for the big occasion

The Daily Record notes that Duran has been described by one of his former coaches as a rebel, and it is that streak of individuality that reportedly sets him apart from some of Celtic’s recent forward signings who have flattered to deceive. According to the report, Duran combines a sublime first touch and quick feet with a willingness to take matters into his own hands, including tracking back to make tackles when his side are under pressure.

Statistically, the Record’s analysis places Duran in the top ten per cent of players in the Azerbaijani top flight across most attacking metrics for a winger, including goal involvements, chances created and expected assists. But the standout element, the report argues, was his tendency to deliver when Qarabag needed him most, both domestically and in Europe.

Champions League heroics against Benfica and Frankfurt

Duran’s importance to Qarabag was underlined in the Champions League, where the Record credits him with a near-solo role in victories over Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt. A double against the German side reportedly proved decisive in sending Qarabag through to the knockout phase of the competition.

As his influence grew through the campaign, Qarabag boss Gurban Gurganov is said to have shifted Duran from his natural right-wing berth into a more central, spearhead role — a switch the Record compares to how Celtic have deployed Daizen Maeda in similarly pivotal moments.

A deal Celtic can’t afford to fumble

With Celtic having been burned before by flair players who struggled for consistency in Scotland, the report is emphatic that Duran’s willingness to get his hands dirty makes him a far safer bet than previous imports who looked good in highlight reels but disappeared over 90 minutes.

Given the reported £3million asking price and Duran’s proven ability to produce in the biggest matches, the Daily Record’s assessment is blunt: if Celtic haggle over the fee and end up missing out, supporters will have every right to be furious. Should the move be completed, however, the club may finally have found the dynamic forward their attack has been lacking.
