Tim Krul: How Steve Harper and Shay Given shaped my Newcastle education

Tim Krul has revealed how being surrounded by two of English football’s most respected goalkeepers helped mould him into a Premier League regular during his formative years at Newcastle United. The Dutch stopper joined the Magpies as a 17-year-old in 2005, walking into a dressing room that already contained Steve Harper and Shay Given.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Krul explained just how demanding life was for a young goalkeeper trying to break into that Newcastle squad. “Steve Harper and Shay Given pushed me to the limit. They expected a lot from me and were really on my case,” he said, reflecting on the standards set by his senior team-mates at St James’ Park.

A debut to remember in Palermo

Krul’s patience eventually paid off with his first Newcastle appearance coming at the age of 18, away to Palermo in the UEFA Cup. According to FourFourTwo, the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on that European night, a year after first arriving on Tyneside as a teenage prospect.

Recalling the build-up to that debut, Krul told the magazine: “We went on a team walk in Palermo and Glenn Roeder said, ‘Are you ready for it?’ It really kicked in that it was going to happen.” The moment marked a significant milestone in a career that had begun under intense scrutiny from Newcastle’s established stoppers.

Loan spells shaped Krul’s development

Before establishing himself as a regular in Newcastle’s first team, Krul gained valuable experience away from St James’ Park. FourFourTwo reports that he spent time on loan in Scotland, as well as in the lower leagues and in European football, building the resilience and know-how needed to eventually compete for the number one shirt at Newcastle.

That grounding, combined with the daily challenge of training alongside Harper and Given, ultimately equipped Krul for a lengthy career in English football and international recognition with the Netherlands. His route into the Newcastle side reflects a well-trodden path for young goalkeepers of that era, who often had to serve a long apprenticeship behind more experienced pros before being trusted with regular first-team minutes.

Krul’s story offers a reminder of how competitive goalkeeping departments once operated at clubs like Newcastle, where nothing was handed to a teenager regardless of potential. The demands placed on him by Harper and Given, by his own account, proved instrumental in forging the mentality he would carry through the rest of his career.
