Henderson stretchered off after freak wrist injury in England celebrations

Jordan Henderson has suffered what Thomas Tuchel described as a “really bad” wrist injury after a freak fall during England’s post-match celebrations following their dramatic win over Mexico at the World Cup. The 36-year-old had to be given oxygen and was stretchered off the pitch at the Azteca Stadium.

Henderson, an unused substitute who was shown a yellow card despite not playing, was celebrating arm-in-arm with his England team-mates in front of supporters behind the goal. He fell awkwardly as he attempted to vault back over the advertising hoardings once the celebrations had finished.

Tuchel confirms extent of the injury

Speaking after the match, England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed the severity of the injury. “Not good. Not good. Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel said.

The Brentford midfielder has featured only sparingly at this World Cup, having played just six minutes of tournament football after coming on as a late substitute in England’s group-stage victory over Panama.

Kane and Bellingham offer reassurance

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to the BBC, offered a slightly more measured assessment of Henderson’s condition. “Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s OK, just something to do with his arm,” Kane said.

Jude Bellingham, who scored twice in the win over Mexico, also gave an update on his team-mate. “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got everything under control,” Bellingham said.

The incident overshadowed what had otherwise been a night of jubilant scenes for England, whose 3-2 victory over Mexico came despite being reduced to ten men. Attention will now turn to further updates on Henderson’s condition as England prepare for their next World Cup fixture.
