Harry Kane left croaking after belting out Wonderwall with England fans in Mexico City

Harry Kane was left barely able to speak during his post-match media duties after England’s dramatic win over Mexico, having lost his voice belting out Oasis’s “Wonderwall” with the travelling Three Lions supporters.
The England captain scored his sixth goal of the World Cup, and his second from the penalty spot in the tournament, as England came from behind to beat Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium and book their place in the quarter-finals.
England had to survive almost 45 minutes with ten men, including second-half stoppage time, after Jarell Quansah was sent off, in what has been described as one of the side’s greatest performances.
Squeaky finish to a famous night
As has become tradition after England matches, the players joined supporters in a chorus of “Wonderwall” once the final whistle had sounded. Kane, who had just played a full 90 minutes at altitude in Mexico City, threw himself into the singalong before facing the cameras.
The result was a noticeably hoarse and squeaky-voiced skipper struggling to get his words out for BBC Sport. “I’ve just been singing, I can’t really talk,” Kane told the broadcaster. “The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”
Asked about the backing of the England fans inside the famous old stadium, Kane added: “Incredible, unbelievable support. [I’m] speechless.” Given the state of his voice, few could argue.
Fans poke fun at Kane’s new voice
Clips of the interview quickly went viral on social media, with supporters joking about the captain’s altered tone. One account compared his squeaky delivery to Mickey Mouse, while others suggested he sounded as though he had smoked “50 cigarettes” in the tunnel.
The lighter moment came after a bruising and eventful night for England, who also saw Jordan Henderson stretchered off following a freak wrist injury sustained during the post-match celebrations.

Eyes on the quarter-final
Kane’s voice may take a few days to recover, but his focus, and that of the rest of the squad, will now turn to England’s World Cup quarter-final. The captain will hope to be fully fit and firing again as Thomas Tuchel’s side push on in the competition.
