Tuchel confirms he will stay on as England boss until Euro 2028 despite Argentina exit

Thomas Tuchel has moved to end speculation over his position as England head coach, confirming he has no intention of quitting despite the Three Lions’ World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. The German insists he will see out his contract, which runs through to the home Euro 2028.

The FA is not expected to place Tuchel under immediate pressure over his position, with the governing body’s stated intention remaining for him to lead England into Euro 2028 unless results were to deteriorate significantly. Tuchel had already agreed a contract extension taking him through to that tournament before England’s run at this World Cup began.

His deal is understood to contain performance-related clauses that could reduce any compensation owed were certain targets not to be met, though the FA’s review of the tournament is not expected to be based on results alone. Tuchel was brought in with the explicit aim of ending England’s long wait for a first World Cup triumph since 1966, and while that objective was not achieved, the manner of victories over Mexico and Norway en route to the semi-final has bought him considerable goodwill.

For now, attention inside the FA is understood to be on a full review of the campaign rather than any immediate change of course, with Tuchel’s own comments leaving little room for doubt that he sees his future with England running at least until the home Euros in 2028.
