Salah set for Trabzonspor medical as Liverpool legend nears free transfer

Trabzonspor have confirmed they have opened transfer talks with Mohamed Salah, with the Turkish Super Lig club hopeful of completing a deal for the free agent before the end of the week.

The Black Sea club released a statement on Turkey’s public disclosure platform confirming discussions were underway. “Negotiations have been launched to transfer professional footballer Mohamed Salah, who is in a free status, to our club,” the statement read.

Trabzonspor chairman Ertugrul Dogan told broadcaster A Spor that although the move was not yet finalised, Salah is due to fly into Istanbul on Wednesday for a medical before travelling on to Trabzon to put pen to paper. Dogan stopped short of confirming an exact date for any contract signing but suggested Thursday was the likely target.

End of a nine-year Anfield stay

Salah departed Liverpool this summer as a free agent after nine years on Merseyside, during which he became one of the most decorated forwards in the club’s history. He scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, helping the Reds to two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2018-19.

His finest individual campaign came in 2024-25, when he struck 29 Premier League goals and added 18 assists, equalling the division’s record for goal involvements in a season and setting a new mark for a 38-game campaign. That season earned him the Premier League Player of the Season award, the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award, making him the first player to claim all three honours in the same season.

The following campaign proved far less prolific, with Salah managing seven goals and seven assists in 27 league appearances. He was also left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad selections at times, a decision that reportedly led to friction with then-manager Arne Slot before his exit was confirmed at the end of the season.

A new chapter in the Black Sea

At 34, Salah would arrive at Trabzonspor as one of the most high-profile names to move to Turkish football in recent years. The Egypt international began his European career at Basel in 2012 before spells at Chelsea and Roma preceded his move to Liverpool in 2017.

Should the deal go through as expected, it would mark the first major move of Salah’s post-Liverpool career and give Trabzonspor a genuine marquee signing as they look to challenge domestically and make an impact in continental competition.
