Musiala reveals ‘treatable seizures’ behind two on-pitch collapses in four days
Bayern Munich winger Jamal Musiala has revealed he is suffering from “treatable absence seizures” following a neurological diagnosis, after collapsing on the pitch twice in the space of four days during pre-season friendlies.
The 23-year-old fell to the ground just minutes after coming on as a substitute in Bayern’s 4-2 win over Heidenheim on Tuesday night, having suffered a similar episode during Saturday’s friendly against RB Leipzig. Both incidents required medical attention on the pitch, but the Germany international says there is no long-term risk to his health.
Musiala explains the diagnosis
Writing on Instagram, Musiala sought to reassure supporters after the two frightening scenes. “First things first, I am doing well. I am incredibly grateful for your messages and your support,” he wrote. “I understand that many of you are worried. I would like to put those concerns to rest today and explain the situation.”
“I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary — but treatable — absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction,” he continued. “These can lead to the kind of incidents seen recently, such as during the match against Leipzig or the game in Heidenheim.”
Musiala said he understood how alarming the collapses must have looked but stressed they are “currently part of my everyday life” and that he is receiving specialist care. “I am receiving excellent medical care and remain very optimistic. FC Bayern and my personal support network are right by my side, helping me through this. Importantly, there is no further health risk involved,” he added.
Cleared to continue playing
The playmaker explained that continuing his career was his own choice, made in close consultation with neurologists. “It was my personal wish to face this challenge; with the medical clearance of the neurologists, I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football,” he said. “I have taken full responsibility for this decision.”
Musiala also asked for privacy going forward, saying he intends to share further details only with those closest to him, the club and his medical team. He said his focus remains on “continuing to chase victories and titles” alongside his teammates.
England link adds to interest
The news will be followed closely by fans on both sides of the Channel given Musiala’s background. Having come through Chelsea’s academy and represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Germany, he remains one of the most recognisable graduates of the English game now plying his trade abroad.
Bayern are due to return to competitive action on Saturday when they face Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup, with Musiala’s involvement likely to be assessed by club medical staff before matchday.
