Jermain Defoe departs Woking after just four months as manager

Jermain Defoe’s first venture into football management has ended after barely four months, with National League side Woking confirming on Thursday that the pair had “mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect”. The 43-year-old former England striker leaves the Surrey club just two weeks before the start of the new season.

Defoe was appointed in late March as the successor to Neal Ardley and led Woking to a 10th-placed finish in the fifth tier last term, winning two of his six league games in charge. Including pre-season friendlies, his tenure stretched to nine matches, the last of which was a 1-0 defeat to Braintree Town earlier this week.

‘Impossible to continue’

In a statement posted on social media, Defoe said his departure had been forced by circumstances beyond his control. “Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position,” he wrote. “I am extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special.”

He added that the experience had been valuable despite its abrupt ending: “My time at Woking FC has been an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career.” Defoe thanked owner Todd Johnson for the opportunity, along with Woking’s supporters and players.

Woking’s own statement was brief, thanking Defoe “for his contribution during his time at Woking Football Club” and wishing him well, while stressing the club “remains fully focused on delivering its objectives both on and off the pitch.”

Off-field questions

The sudden nature of the split has raised eyebrows given Defoe had spoken enthusiastically about the upcoming campaign only days earlier, with much of Woking’s summer recruitment reportedly built around him and director of football Jody Brown. Notably, Defoe’s statement made no mention of Brown, fuelling suggestions that the reasons behind his exit lie away from the pitch rather than in results or performances.

Woking are due to open their 2026-27 National League season against Sutton United, leaving the club needing to appoint a new manager at short notice.

A storied playing career

Defoe made his name as one of English football’s most prolific finishers, scoring 305 goals in 763 senior appearances for clubs including West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth and Sunderland before retiring in 2022. He won 20 goals in 57 appearances for England, representing his country at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

Since hanging up his boots, Defoe had been building towards a coaching career, serving on Rangers’ interim staff in 2021 and later working within Tottenham’s academy setup before leaving in 2024 to pursue a full-time managerial role. His appointment at Woking in March was seen as his first real step towards that ambition, but the National League club must now search for its second manager of 2026.
