Enzo Fernandez apologises to Argentina fans after World Cup final red card

Enzo Fernandez has spoken publicly for the first time since being sent off in Argentina’s World Cup final defeat, thanking supporters in a heartfelt Instagram post a day after the match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Chelsea midfielder was dismissed in second-half stoppage time as Argentina slipped to a 1-0 loss to Spain, with Ferran Torres netting the winner in extra time. Fernandez’s departure left the reigning champions to play the final half-hour of the tournament with ten men.

Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic first booked Fernandez for dissent before showing him a second yellow, and therefore red, for a reckless late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. The 25-year-old reportedly apologised to Argentine fans as he left the field and vented his frustration by kicking a pitchside microphone on his way down the tunnel.

A message of gratitude

Roughly a day after full time, Fernandez posted a lengthy statement on social media reflecting on Argentina’s campaign. “As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” he wrote. “For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way.”

“It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up,” he continued, adding that it had been “a privilege” to be part of a squad that had “defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment.”

He also thanked Argentina’s travelling support directly, saying: “Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the affection, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world.” Fernandez closed by insisting that wearing the Argentina shirt remained “the greatest honour” of his career and that he would “continue to give my all” whenever called upon again.

Sixth player sent off in a World Cup final

Fernandez’s red card made him only the sixth player in history to be dismissed in a World Cup final. Before his exit he had been central to Argentina’s run to the showpiece, scoring the winner against Egypt and a crucial equaliser in a 2-1 win over England earlier in the tournament, finishing the finals with two goals in seven appearances having played every minute.

The dismissal was not the only flashpoint of a fractious finish in East Rutherford. FIFA has launched an investigation into ugly scenes that followed the final whistle, after a brawl broke out as Spain’s players celebrated their triumph. Argentina’s Nahuel Molina squared up to Rodri, while Leandro Paredes was involved in an altercation with both Eric Garcia and Gavi, wrestling the latter to the ground.
