Chelsea complete seven-year deal for Argentina’s Valentin Barco from Strasbourg

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg on a seven-year deal, with the fee undisclosed. The versatile midfielder and left-back, who came through the Boca Juniors academy, moves to Stamford Bridge as one of several new arrivals under manager Xabi Alonso this summer.

Barco joins a growing list of new faces at Chelsea alongside Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Emmanuel Emegha, Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra, as Alonso continues to reshape his squad. He is set to link up with the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour, with Chelsea due to face Juventus in Hong Kong on 5 August.

From Brighton loan to Ligue 1 regular

Barco’s move to England is not his first. Brighton signed him from Boca Juniors in 2024 for a reported fee of around £7.9m, but he made only a handful of appearances on the south coast before heading out on loan to Strasbourg later that year.

That loan spell proved successful enough that Strasbourg made the move permanent the following summer, with Barco going on to make more than 50 appearances for the Ligue 1 club and helping them qualify for the Conference League.

A familiar route between sister clubs

The transfer continues a well-worn path between Chelsea and Strasbourg, both of which are owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Barco becomes the second player to move from the French club to Stamford Bridge this summer, and the deal is understood to be the 13th transfer business between the two sides since the start of last season.

The arrangement has repeatedly raised questions about multi-club ownership in English and European football, though such deals remain within the rules currently governing the game.

World Cup exposure and a Bellingham flashpoint

Barco featured for Argentina during their run to the final of the 2026 World Cup, where they lost to Spain, having earlier knocked out England in the semi-finals. He was involved in a heated, viral exchange with Jude Bellingham after that victory, with the England midfielder seen slapping the Argentinian in the aftermath.

For Chelsea supporters, the arrival adds another point of intrigue to a summer already packed with incoming talent as Alonso looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts next season.
