A whirlwind rise through the game

Vuskovic’s career has moved at remarkable speed since he broke through at Hajduk Split, where he became the youngest player ever to appear in Croatia’s top division at just 16 years old and went on to become the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer.

Tottenham had agreed a deal for the defender two years before he actually arrived in north London last year, and he was swiftly loaned out to Hamburg for the 2024-25 campaign. He impressed enormously in Germany, making 30 appearances and scoring six goals as Hamburg returned to the Bundesliga, earning him the division’s Rookie of the Season award and a place in its Team of the Year.

At international level, Vuskovic has already won six senior caps for Croatia and scored once, and he made his World Cup debut this summer against England in the group stage.

Hurzeler backs Vuskovic to settle quickly

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said the club had monitored Vuskovic’s progress closely and were confident he could adapt to the demands of English football despite his tender age. “Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment,” Hurzeler said.

“There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League,” he added. “We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”

Van Hecke heads to Spurs in reverse move

Vuskovic’s arrival effectively fills the gap left by Netherlands centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who has completed the opposite journey by signing for Tottenham on a long-term contract worth a reported £52m. It leaves both clubs having strengthened their defensive options through a direct swap of business, even if no formal exchange deal was struck.

For Tottenham, the sale represents a significant profit on a player they only signed last year, while Brighton will hope their latest high-risk, high-reward recruitment gamble pays off in the way previous ventures into the continental market have done under the current ownership.

Brighton open their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August, kicking off at 2pm. Supporters at the Amex will be eager to see whether their new club-record signing is handed an immediate route into Hurzeler’s back line.
