Postecoglou returns to management as Al-Nassr appoint him Ronaldo’s new boss

Ange Postecoglou has returned to football management, agreeing a two-year deal to take charge of Al-Nassr and, in turn, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Saudi Pro League champions confirmed the appointment on their official X account, ending months of speculation over the Australian’s next move.

It marks Postecoglou’s first return to the touchline since his turbulent 39-day spell in charge of Nottingham Forest last year, which ended in his dismissal. He has spent this summer working as a television pundit for ITV during the World Cup.

A new chapter in Riyadh

Announcing the news, Al-Nassr posted: “A New Chapter… Mr. Ange Postecoglou is the head coach of Al Nassr’s first football team with a contract lasting two seasons.” The statement leaves no doubt over the scale of the challenge awaiting the 60-year-old, who now takes charge of one of the biggest clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Postecoglou replaces Jorge Jesus, who left Al-Nassr after guiding the club to the Saudi Pro League title. The Portuguese coach’s departure, despite delivering silverware, opened the door for Postecoglou to step back into club football having spent the past several months out of the game.

From Spurs and Forest to Ronaldo

Postecoglou’s managerial career in England included a spell at Tottenham Hotspur before his brief and difficult tenure at Nottingham Forest, which lasted little more than a month before he was sacked. His switch to Saudi Arabia represents a significant shift, both geographically and in profile, as he now takes responsibility for a squad built around Ronaldo.

The 41-year-old forward remains the figurehead of Al-Nassr’s project, and Postecoglou’s ability to manage a dressing room containing one of football’s biggest names will be closely watched by supporters back in England, where he retains a high profile following his time at Spurs.

His time as a pundit at this summer’s World Cup has kept him in the public eye throughout, and his surprise appointment at Al-Nassr now gives him the chance to rebuild his managerial reputation away from the scrutiny of English football.
