Klopp confirms talks over Germany job after Nagelsmann’s shock World Cup exit

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is in talks to take over as Germany head coach, following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure after a chastening World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay.

Nagelsmann left his post having reportedly received a £6million severance package, and the German Football Association (DFB) is understood to have moved swiftly to identify a successor. Klopp, who had been working as a pundit for German broadcaster Magenta TV during the tournament, was quickly touted as the leading candidate.

Klopp breaks his silence

Speaking on Magenta TV, Klopp confirmed that discussions with the DFB were indeed under way, though he was keen to stress the process would take time.

“Yes, I can confirm the talks,” Klopp said. “Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor. And they’re talking to me.”

When asked whether leaving his current role would be straightforward, Klopp was cautious rather than committal. “Time. I’m under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks,” he added.

From Liverpool to Red Bull

Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 after guiding the club to their long-awaited Premier League title, cementing his status as one of the most admired managers in the club’s history. Since then he has taken up the position of Head of Global Soccer with Red Bull, a role that has kept him out of frontline coaching but close to the game.

Any move to Germany would represent a significant shift for Klopp, who would need to be released from his existing contractual commitments before formally taking charge of the national side. His comments suggest that, while the interest is genuine, nothing is likely to be resolved quickly.

A pressing vacancy for the DFB

Nagelsmann’s exit came after Germany’s disappointing knockout-stage defeat by Paraguay at the World Cup, a result that prompted immediate scrutiny of his position. The DFB now faces the task of appointing a new head coach with the tournament still unfolding, and Klopp’s confirmation of talks will only intensify speculation over whether he is set to become Germany’s next manager.

For now, no timeline has been set, and Klopp’s own words indicate that his Red Bull contract remains a significant hurdle before any appointment could be finalised.
