Nash targets fresh start as Blyth Spartans look to shake off ‘stigma’

Blyth Spartans manager Marc Nash has admitted the famous FA Cup giant-killers have carried “a bit of a stigma” following a torrid run of relegations, but believes he now has the chance to build the club a genuinely clean slate.

According to The Non-League Football Paper, Nash’s comments come after Blyth suffered back-to-back relegations that dragged them down from the National League North into the Northern Premier League East Division.

A third successive drop was avoided

The report notes that a third consecutive relegation had appeared a real possibility midway through last season, with Spartans’ campaign hitting a low point on New Year’s Day when they were beaten by local rivals Blyth Town.

That defeat left Nash’s side scrapping to stay up, according to the paper, as the club fought to arrest a slide that had seen them tumble two divisions in successive campaigns.

Blyth Spartans remain one of English non-league football’s most storied names, best remembered for their FA Cup exploits, and Nash is understood to be keen to restore some of that lost prestige as the club heads into a new season with stability finally back on the agenda.

Nash sees opportunity in the reset

Rather than dwelling on the club’s recent struggles, Nash is said to view the situation as an opportunity, with the difficult period behind Blyth now offering him something of a blank canvas to work with at Croft Park.

The Non-League Football Paper’s report frames stability as the key theme for the Blyth boss heading into the new campaign, following a period in which the club’s on-field fortunes had been overshadowed by the turbulence of successive relegations.

Blyth Spartans will now aim to use their place in the Northern Premier League East Division as a platform to rebuild, with Nash tasked with steering the club away from the “stigma” he says has clung to it in recent years.
