West Ham appoint Nils Koppen as new recruitment chief in summer shake-up

West Ham United have confirmed the appointment of Nils Koppen as the club’s new director of player recruitment, as part of a wider overhaul of their football operations for the new season.
The Belgian arrives at the London Stadium from FC Copenhagen, where he served as technical director. Koppen has previously held recruitment roles at Rangers and PSV Eindhoven, giving him extensive experience across three different European leagues.
In a statement, West Ham said: “Koppen was identified as the outstanding candidate for the new role, following a thorough and detailed recruitment process that included the board and head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.”
Part of a new football leadership structure
The club confirmed that Koppen’s arrival forms part of a new football leadership structure for the men’s team, with the Belgian tasked with identifying and recruiting the players Nuno Espirito Santo believes are needed to strengthen the squad this summer.
West Ham’s hierarchy clearly see the recruitment department as a priority area to address heading into the new campaign, with the transfer window now open until 1 September.
Koppen’s remit will reportedly cover scouting, data analysis and negotiations, working closely alongside Nuno Espirito Santo as the head coach looks to shape his squad for the challenges ahead.
A busy summer ahead
The appointment comes at what promises to be a hectic period for West Ham in the market, with the club expected to be active in identifying reinforcements across several positions before the window closes.
Further transfer business is anticipated in the coming weeks as West Ham continue to build their squad under the new recruitment structure, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s input central to the process.
