Roma readying £38.5m bid for Mason Greenwood after personal terms agreed

Roma are preparing to lodge an opening bid worth around £38.5 million for Mason Greenwood, with personal terms already agreed between the two parties. According to Sky Italia, the Serie A club are readying an offer of roughly €45 million, including bonuses and a sell-on clause, for the former Manchester United forward.
Greenwood, 24, has been strongly tipped to leave Marseille this summer after two years in Ligue 1. He joined the French club from Manchester United for £26.7 million following the collapse of the criminal case against him, which had seen him charged with attempted rape and controlling and coercive behaviour before those charges were dropped.
Since arriving in France, Greenwood has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille, establishing himself as one of the division’s most productive attackers. Should Roma’s move go through, he would sign a five-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico.
Marseille holding out for bigger fee
Despite the agreement over personal terms, Roma and Marseille are yet to find common ground on a transfer fee. Marseille are said to want closer to €55 million for their forward, though reports suggest the Ligue 1 side would be open to negotiating that figure down.
Greenwood himself had suggested in May that he would be happy to extend his stay in France. Speaking at the Ligue 1 awards ceremony, he said: “This season has been difficult at times for us as a team, especially in the last few months. But, individually, I think I’ve had a good season.”
He added: “There are some incredible players in this Team of the Year, so it’s nice for me to get this award. Ligue 1 is an amazing league. We play some incredible games and, to my mind, it’s one of the best leagues I have played in. I hope I will be able to stay put here.”
International future still unresolved
While his club future edges towards a resolution, Greenwood’s international situation remains unclear. England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed earlier this year that the forward is not being considered for his squad.
“I have not spoken to him until now,” Tuchel said. “I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team.”
Former Jamaica boss Steve McLaren, however, revealed that Greenwood has not formally committed to representing the Reggae Boyz. “We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp,” McLaren said. “But in a conversation with his family we found out he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody. He’s taking his time over that, so it’s a little bit disappointing.”
McLaren added: “We probably have to be more patient, but we will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica. He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the present moment. We have to respect that however much we’ve worked hard to get him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future.”
