Man Utd set to sign Swansea goalkeeper Kit Margetson, son of Martyn Margetson

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign highly-rated young goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City, according to Wales Online. The 19-year-old, who represents Wales at Under-21 level, is set to become a free agent this summer after contract talks with the Swans broke down.

Margetson is the son of Martyn Margetson, the well-known former head of goalkeeping for England, Wales and Swansea City, who left his coaching role in South Wales at the end of last season. Father and son are now both starting new chapters in their respective careers, with United reportedly moving quickly to get the youngster’s paperwork sorted.

Imposing shot-stopper with international pedigree

Standing at 6ft 4in, Margetson has the physical profile clubs look for in a modern goalkeeper, and his height and athleticism have already helped him shine throughout his youth career. He has progressed steadily through Wales’s junior international ranks and is regarded as one of the most promising young British goalkeepers of his generation.

Although he never made a competitive first-team appearance for Swansea, Margetson gained valuable senior experience during a successful loan spell at Connah’s Quay Nomads last season. Playing in the Cymru Premier, he made 34 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets as the Welsh club secured qualification for European competition.

United scouts tracked him closely

United’s respected goalkeeping scout Tony Coton was reportedly watching Margetson closely as far back as March, during Connah’s Quay’s fixture against The New Saints. Swansea confirmed in May that they were in talks over new terms with the teenager, but those discussions ultimately stalled, opening the door for United to move in.

Because Margetson joined Swansea’s academy at Under-15 level, United will be required to pay a compensation fee to the Welsh club to complete any deal, though the exact figure has not been disclosed. The Red Devils are said to have prioritised getting the move over the line quickly to see off interest from other clubs, including Liverpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

What’s next for Margetson at Old Trafford

The young goalkeeper is expected to link up initially with Manchester United’s Under-21 squad before potentially heading straight back out on loan. Reports suggest a temporary move to the National League could be on the cards, allowing him to continue gaining regular first-team football rather than being kept out of matchday action at academy level.
